Buon giorno, Suzie. I hope you're doing well. It's starting to cool off a bit, so I suppose summer is starting to come to a close.
If you have a moment, I could use your advice (you seem to be experienced in this area) with regards to a baking project. It isn't immediately pressing, so if you're busy take your time.
Things have been ... going. But they've been better, the past week or so.
I have a friend in the city whose birthday is coming up. I always used to stop by a bakery to pick him up a cake but, obviously, that's not really an option here. I'm not incapable in the kitchen, but desserts aren't exactly my forte. (I don't really like sweet things, so I don't cook a lot of them.)
Do you have any suggestions? It doesn't have to necessarily be a cake, but I'd like to make him something that would make him think of Napoli.
Mmm! Well, for my birthday I made rum cake, which is pretty easy to make in and of itself! The toppings and everything are a little more difficult but I think the cake and rum part would definitely be easy enough even for someone who hasn't made a whole lot of desserts!
Ummm...but if it's something that would make someone think of Napoli right away, that sounds like sfogliatelle. They're...not VERY easy — actually, they can be pretty complicated! But if you're willing to keep trying at them until they come out, I think that'd definitely be something that would make him think of Italia right away.
Well. To be honest, Suzie, there's so little to do here, I have nothing but time to fool around with a recipe. And I have nearly a month to get it right.
Would you mind giving me both recipes? If I can't manage to get the sfogliatelle to come out, I can always fall back on the rum cake.
Sure!! Let me write them all out and send them over, or if you want them a little faster than that, just come by the apartment and I'll give them to you on paper!!
Nearly a month, huh...so your friend's birthday is at the end of September?
I probably would just transcribe the recipes to a notebook, so a physical reference would actually be very helpful. I'm at the library right now. Where is your apartment in relation to there?
South! I walk to the library all the time, so there's a really easy path, you go south from the library and then over the bridge and be careful not to get splashed by anything in the river! And then past the lake and then down and around the orchard and when you see the abandoned restaurant on your left you turn left and then you go straight past it one street but then turn left on the second and then go straight all the way until you see it! It's a big apartment building, you really can't miss it!
...September 27th...
Fugo, are you making Italian desserts for JOJO????
[Fugo makes a mental note: Suzie, despite being a sweetheart and doing her very best, is not good at giving directions. Thankfully, since Dio lives in the same building as Joseph, Caeser, and Suzie, he already knows where to go.
However. What's really baffling is the second half of her message.]
Why the hell would I bake Joseph anything? I feel like you know very well what my opinion of him is.
No, these will be for Bruno Buccellati. Thank you for the directions, Suzie, I'll be over in a bit.
Oh, right. I forgot he posted that silly announcement a few days ago.
But it would be a little hard for me to stop by a bakery for Joseph back home. I don't think he lives in Napoli. Besides, assuming he's still alive, he'd be 81 years old. That would be quite the age gap between friends.
That's why I was confused! What are the chances that we'd both have a friend with a birthday on that day, but that they'd be two completely different friends? So it's not so strange to think they might be the same one, except that didn't make any sense either!
I don't know the exact probability, but my guess is that it would be very low.
What's really strange to me is I don't think Buccellati and Joseph could be any more different if they tried. I suppose it just goes to show that astrology is junk.
Oh...because the same day couldn't say two completely opposite things about two such different people, you mean? I guess that makes sense! I've never really thought much about astrology, to be honest...
Well! I'm sure he must be wonderful, your friend! And I think it's really nice of you to go to such great lengths for him for his birthday.
REALLY?? CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT MY BIRTHDAY SAYS ABOUT ME??
I mean supposedly says about me anyway! I think it'd be lots of fun as a way of passing the time. Oh, and yours too, I want to hear what it says about yours!!
Mmm. Hey, is he one of the ones who...um, I guess I should say...who you feel like you need to repay, like you were telling me about that one time?
If you really want to know, I need to know your birthday. And I know only general facts about the signs; I would have to find a book and look up the fortune for your birthday for anything supposedly specific.
... yeah. But. He's more than that. I'm not on good terms with my relatives; he's the one who took me in after my grandfather cut me off.
June 8th would make you a Gemini. The constellation that sign represents features The Twins, Castor and Pollux. If I'm remembering correctly, this sign is supposed to represent versatile people with a fluid nature. They're supposed to be creative, but intellectual and philosophical; quick to choose, but responsible. That sort of thing. See what I mean? You can pick and choose the things you fit you.
Yes. Legally speaking, I'm not part of the Fugo "family" anymore. I use the name because I like to think it annoys my grandfather to see that I'm still around.
...Haha, well, "quick to choose" doesn't sound very much like me! And I'm really not sure about the others, either, that all makes it out to sound like I'm somebody different and special, and I'm really not! I'm just me, Suzie Quatro, no more and no less...
...
I'm really sorry, Fugo. I think that's an awful thing to do to anyone, but especially to a grandchild.
"Versatile". Out of all of those words, I think that one suits you best.
Honestly, it's fine. It was years ago. And I deserved it. Besides, If he hadn't done that I probably never would have met Buccellati. And, I know this probably sounds strange, but I feel more at home living with him than I ever did in my grandfather's house.

Buccellati is pretty great. ... to be honest, he's a really amazing person. He's done a lot for me. So I'd like to give back, at least a little.

I don't want to go back there ever again.
